Power Smash

Description

Power Smash, known as Virtua Tennis internationally, debuted in Japanese arcades in December 1999, running on Sega’s NAOMI hardware. It featured licensed professional players such as Tim Henman, Carlos Moyá, and Tommy Haas, alongside fictional competitors. The game’s design emphasised intuitive pick‑up‑and‑play mechanics: a simple two‑button control scheme (lob and slice/topspin) combined with directional input allowed for surprising depth, rewarding timing and positioning over complex command inputs.

The Dreamcast port expanded the arcade original with a World Circuit mode, where players trained their custom character, entered tournaments, and unlocked new courts and gear. Multiplayer support for up to four players made it a staple of the Dreamcast’s sports library. The Japanese version also included online play that supported online versus matches and rankings/leaderboards. However, the servers were shut down too soon, removing the functionality. Versions in North America and Europe did not ship with online play.

The game’s success led to sequels (Virtua Tennis 2 / Power Smash 2 in 2001, Virtua Tennis 3 in 2006, and Virtua Tennis 4 in 2011), as well as handheld adaptations. The game has crisp visuals, fluid animation, and a balance between arcade immediacy and simulation authenticity. It became one of the Dreamcast’s defining sports titles, often compared favourably to Sega’s Virtua Striker for football and NBA 2K for basketball in terms of setting a new standard for accessible yet deep sports gameplay.
