A 3D arena fighting game that is one of the early Dreamcast’s most distinctive and inventive titles.

Description

Power Stone moves away from traditional one‑on‑one fighters such as Virtua Fighter, SoulCalibur, or Marvel vs. Capcom, and places characters in fully interactive arenas where movement, environmental interaction, and item use are as important as direct combat. The game leans into pulp adventure and colourful exaggeration. Its cast of characters ranging from pirates and ninjas to inventors and adventurers, evoke a globe‑trotting, comic‑book sensibility. The titular Power Stones act as mystical artefacts that grant fighters temporary transformations into superpowered forms, reinforcing the theme of hidden strength and fantastical escalation.

Gameplay is defined by freedom and chaos. Arenas are multi‑layered spaces filled with throwable objects, weapons, and hazards, encouraging improvisation rather than rigid combo memorisation. Collecting three Power Stones allows a character to transform, unleashing devastating attacks that can swing the tide of battle. Compared to contemporaries like Super Smash Bros. (1999), Power Stone distinguished itself with its 3D movement and environmental interaction, which were rare in fighting games at the time.

Its contribution to the genre is significant despite its niche status. Power Stone demonstrated that fighting games could thrive outside the strict one‑on‑one formula, paving the way for more experimental arena fighters. Reception was strong among Dreamcast players, who praised its vibrant style and multiplayer gameplay. The game embodies Capcom’s creative experimentation during the Dreamcast era, and often cited as a title that deserves revival.
