Alien Storm

エイリアンストーム

A side-scrolling action game that blends beat-’em-up combat with shooting gallery segments and sci-fi parody.

Description

Alien Storm is a genre-blending arcade title that channels the DNA of Golden Axe and Streets of Rage, but swaps swords and fists for laser cannons and alien guts. Players choose from three quirky members of the “Alien Busters”: Karen, Garth, and Scooter (a robot). Each character wields unique weapons and screen-clearing special attacks powered by collectible energy. The game unfolds across episodic missions, with objectives like rescuing civilians or destroying UFOs, and enemies that grotesquely burst from everyday objects like trash cans and vending machines.

What sets Alien Storm apart is its mechanical variety: standard side-scrolling brawls are punctuated by first-person shooting gallery stages and high-speed dash segments, keeping the pacing unpredictable and arcade-friendly. The visual style is exaggerated and cartoonish, with gooey alien designs and explosive effects that lean into parody. The Master System port, while scaled down to single-player and simplified graphics, retains the core gameplay loop and even retools character abilities to fit the hardware e.g. Garth’s lightning becomes flame, and Scooter’s explosive teleport gets a visual tweak. Though not as widely celebrated as Sega’s flagship beat-’em-ups, the eccentric tone and genre-hopping ambition makes it worth a look at.
