Description
The Light Phaser is a pistol‑shaped wired peripheral that detects CRT scan timing and on‑screen brightness to register hits in compatible shooting games. It plugs into a controller port and offers an ergonomic grip, single large trigger and simple calibration for typical television sets of the era. Its engineering emphasised low cost and reliability, aligning the peripheral closely with arcade‑style shooting mechanics translated for home play.
There were about a dozen Master System titles that supported the light gun peripheral. Most games were designed exclusively for the peripheral, like Shooting Gallery, while Assault City had two versions, one for regular gamepad and one for the Light Phaser.
The Light Phaser proved one of the platform’s more visible accessories in retail catalogues and department‑store promotions because light‑gun titles were accessible to casual buyers and showcased in-store demos. However, the relatively small library of high‑profile compatible titles constrained long‑term sales momentum.
