Manual: Alex Kidd in Miracle World
アレックスキッドのミラクルワールドA 2D platform game that became one of the console’s most recognisable titles, in part because Sega later built it directly into many Master System and Master System II units.
Description
Alex Kidd in Miracle World follows a young martial artist trained in the ancient technique of Shellcore, which allows him to shatter rocks with his fists. After learning that the villain Janken the Great has defeated King Thunder of Radaxian and kidnapped Prince Egle and Princess Lora, Alex sets out across the Miracle World to rescue them and uncover his own connection to the royal family.
Across 17 stages, the game mixes side‑scrolling and single‑screen environments, with Alex punching enemies, breaking blocks, and collecting money used to purchase items and vehicles such as motorbikes and helicopters. A distinctive feature is its boss encounters: instead of traditional combat, Alex must defeat Janken’s three henchmen and eventually Janken himself, through games of jan‑ken‑pon (rock‑paper‑scissors), losing instantly if he chooses incorrectly. Alex can only take a single hit before dying, and the game includes no save system, though a hidden continue code allows players to restart a level at the cost of in‑game currency.
The game’s structure blends platforming with light puzzle elements, and its world includes varied locations such as Mt. Eternal, Lake Fathom, and the city of Radaxian. Its mix of bright visuals, unusual mechanics, and Sega‑specific character design helped define the company’s pre‑Sonic identity. Over time, Alex Kidd in Miracle World has become one of the most iconic Master System titles, remembered for its distinctive tone, its rock‑paper‑scissors battles, and its role as Sega’s early mascot platformer. A modern remake, Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX, was released in 2021, updating the original’s visuals and controls while preserving its core structure.
