Slap Shot offers both exhibition matches and tournament play, with a roster of 24 international teams divided into three pools of difficulty. Pool A features the strongest nations of the era including Canada, the USSR, and Czechoslovakia, while Pools B and C represent mid‑tier and developing hockey countries. This structure loosely mirrors the IIHF World Championship divisions of the late 1980s, giving the game a veneer of authenticity. It was Sega’s attempt to bring the fast‑paced, arcade‑style hockey experience to its 8‑bit console, drawing clear inspiration from Konami’s Blades of Steel and Nintendo’s Ice Hockey.

Gameplay is straightforward: players skate across a vertically scrolling rink, passing, shooting, and checking opponents. The mechanics are simple but effective, with a focus on fast action rather than simulation. One of the game’s unique features was the “Shot Cam Replay”, a cinematic replay of goals that had previously only appeared in PC hockey titles like Face Off! (1988). This gave Slap Shot a distinctive presentation flourish compared to its inspirations.

Visually, the game borrows heavily from Blades of Steel, with similar rink layouts and player sprites. While not groundbreaking, the graphics were serviceable for the Master System, and the replay camera added a touch of novelty. Sound effects and crowd noise were minimal, but the emphasis was clearly on gameplay speed and accessibility.

Slap Shot was a clone with a twist with its quirky replay system. Although developed in Japan, it was only sold internationally. Considered not as refined as its contemporaries, but it did expand the Master System’s sports library.
