A 2.5D isometric platformer with a lot of pre-rendered sprites. Reflects the era where development started to bridge the gap with 3D gaming. In retrospective however this whole period often ages poorly.
Description
Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island, known as Sonic 3D Blast in NTSC regions, trades the franchise’s traditional side-scrolling speed for an isometric viewpoint. The story sees Dr. Robotnik capturing Flickies, mystical birds able to warp through giant rings, to harness their powers for his schemes. Sonic’s mission is to smash open enemy robots, free the Flickies inside, and guide them safely to a giant ring at each stage’s end. Losing rings or taking damage scatters the Flickies, forcing players to recollect them before progressing. This slower, exploration-heavy structure was inspired in part by Sega’s 1984 arcade game Flicky, blending platforming with light puzzle elements.
The Mega Drive version used pre-rendered sprites for a pseudo-3D look, adds higher-resolution graphics, improved effects, and polygonal special stages designed by Sonic Team. Across both versions, players traversed themed zones like Green Grove, Rusty Ruin, and Panic Puppet, collecting Chaos Emeralds in bonus stages and facing Robotnik in multi-phase boss fights.
Overall the game, particularly the Sega Saturn port, is a poor replacement for the cancelled Sonic X-treme. Though divisive among fans for its departure from high-speed 2D action, Flickies’ Island remains a distinctive experiment in the Sonic series and a notable farewell to the blue blur’s 16-bit era.
