Case: Virtual On Cyber Troopers

A 3D mecha combat game developed by Sega AM3 that was super popular in the arcades, ported from Sega’s Model 2 hardware. Case only, slightly damaged from adhesive labels.

Description

Cyber Troopers Virtual On is set in a near‑future corporate dystopia where rival conglomerates deploy giant humanoid robots known as Virtuaroids in sanctioned combat. Players select from a roster of Virtuaroids, each with distinct weapon loadouts and movement styles, and battle opponents in enclosed 3D arenas. The Saturn version supported both the standard controller and the optional Twin Stick peripheral, which replicated the arcade’s dual‑joystick controls.

Gameplay blends elements of fighting games and shooters. Each Virtuaroid has three primary attacks (left weapon, right weapon, and combined), with variations triggered by movement inputs such as dashing, jumping, or crouching. Matches are fought in best‑of‑three rounds, with victory achieved by depleting the opponent’s life bar. The control scheme emphasises mobility, with dashes, sidesteps, and aerial manoeuvres allowing players to evade fire while maintaining lock‑on targeting.

The Saturn port was praised for its faithful recreation of the arcade experience, though there were obviously compromises in frame rate and graphical fidelity. The Twin Stick controller really helped capture the arcade feel, and updates to the game also supported online play with Sega’s NetLink modem in North America and XBAND in Japan. Outside Japan the game may have been somewhat niche without the arcade culture that was its foundation of its rapid popularity. Regardless it is a classic, pioneering the arena‑mech subgenre and laying the foundation for sequels such as Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram (1998).
