Description
The Sega Saturn is a fifth-generation home video game console developed by Sega, released in Japan on November 22, 1994, and in the west in 1995. It features a complex dual-CPU architecture with eight processors, optimised for 2D sprite rendering but later adapted for 3D polygon graphics to compete with Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo’s upcoming Nintendo 64. Games were distributed on CD-ROM, and the system became known for high-quality arcade ports, original titles like Nights into Dreams and Panzer Dragoon, and strong 2D performance.
While the Saturn enjoyed significant success in Japan it struggled in Western markets due to its high launch price, limited third-party support, and a surprise early release in North America that alienated some retailers. Discontinued in the West by 1998 but supported in Japan until 2000, the Saturn ultimately sold around 9 million units worldwide. Respectively it is a technically ambitious, arguably over-engineered, but commercially troubled console, with a cult following for its unique library and hardware design.
