Backup Memory
パワーメモリーOfficial Sega 4 Mbit backup memory cartridge that expanded the rather limited internal memory and was non-volatile. European/PAL market label, part number 670-6415B.
Description
The Sega Saturn Backup Memory (often called the Backup Memory Cartridge) is an official external save storage accessory for the Sega Saturn, designed to expand the console’s limited internal save capacity. The Saturn itself only has 32 KB of volatile internal backup RAM, powered by a small CR2032 battery that can lose saves if the battery dies. The Backup Memory cartridge plugs into the Saturn’s cartridge slot and provides 512 KB (4 Mbit) of non‑volatile storage, enough to hold dozens of save files from multiple games without worrying about battery loss.
Once inserted, players can manage saves through the Saturn’s Memory Manager menu, copying data between the internal memory and the cartridge, deleting files, or clearing the cartridge entirely. It’s compatible with most Saturn games that support external saves, though some titles require saves to be in internal memory to load properly. The cartridge is purely for save data, it doesn’t add RAM for game performance like the separate 1 MB/4 MB RAM expansion carts.
For Saturn owners in the 1990s, the Backup Memory was almost essential for RPGs, sports titles, and other save‑heavy games, especially in regions where replacement internal batteries were harder to find. Today I’d continue to use it in lieu on the internal memory for the longevity.
