Virtua Gun
バーチャガンA light gun accessory designed for use with Sega Saturn shooting games, built to replicate arcade play in the home. The European/PAL model came in blue.
Description
The Virtua Gun connects directly to the Saturn controller ports and functions as a precision input device for titles such as Virtua Cop and Virtua Cop 2. It uses infrared detection from the cathode ray tube display to register aim and trigger pulls, with calibration routines ensuring accuracy across different screen sizes. The design resembles a compact pistol with a responsive trigger and optional auto‑fire switch, intended to mirror the arcade cabinet’s weapon feel while remaining lightweight for extended sessions.
The original Japanese domestic model was solid in black, while this European model was in the same casing but in blue. The peripheral was sold in bundles with Virtua Cop and House of the Dead, but also sold individually. This unit came in the non-bundled retail packaging.
The accessory had great responsiveness and accuracy. It brought the arcade experience of Virtua Cop into the home effectively. Retrospectively it unfortunately requires a CRT display, which limits compatibility with later television technologies. It let the Saturn support a range of arcade shooting titles and may be considered as one of Sega’s most successful home light gun designs.
