Vampire Hunter: Darkstalkers’ Revenge

ヴァンパイア ハンター

A monster‑themed fighting series with new characters, chain combos, and a multi‑stock super gauge, establishing the fast, fluid style that defined the Darkstalkers franchise.

Description

Vampire Hunter: Darkstalkers’ Revenge (known internationally as Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge) was the direct sequel to Vampire: The Night Warriors (1994). The game retained the series’ distinctive cast of supernatural fighters including vampires, werewolves, succubi, mummies, and other mythic beings, while introducing new characters and gameplay refinements that set it apart from its predecessor. The story remained largely the same as the first game: the alien overlord Pyron invades Earth, and the world’s monsters rise to battle both him and each other.

Two newcomers joined the roster: Donovan Baine, a dhampir monk wielding a cursed sword, and Hsien‑Ko (Lei‑Lei), a jiangshi who fights alongside her twin sister. In addition, the bosses from the first game, Pyron and Huitzil (Phobos), became fully playable. This brought the total roster to 14 characters, each with unique move sets and elaborate sprite work. The new characters added their own storylines: Donovan as a hunter struggling with his cursed blood, and Hsien‑Ko seeking to free her mother’s soul, expanding the series’ gothic mythos.

It introduced several gameplay innovations. Players could now store multiple levels of their Special gauge, carrying them between rounds, which allowed for more strategic use of powerful attacks. Two types of super moves were added: ES Specials, which consumed a portion of the gauge, and EX Specials, which required a full stock. The game also implemented chain combos, enabling smoother offensive sequences, and offered an optional auto‑block mode for less experienced players. These systems gave Vampire Hunter a faster, more aggressive pace while still rewarding technical mastery.

The game was ported from the Capcom’s CP System II arcade hardware. The home conversion for the Sega Saturn was praised for its fidelity to the arcade original thanks to the console’s 2D strengths. Vampire Hunter was lauded for its fluid animation, colourful gothic aesthetic, and balanced roster, and really where the Darkstalkers series found its identity. The game has since been reissued in compilations such as Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection (2005), Darkstalkers Resurrection (2013), and Capcom Fighting Collection (2022), ensuring its continued availability.
