A science fiction and fantasy RPG series originally created by Hironobu Sakaguchi as his last-ditch effort in the game industry. The series has since branched into other genres such as tactical and action RPGs, MMORPGs, racing, third-person shooter, fighting, and rhythm; and into other media, including CGI films, anime, manga, and novels. Most instalments are stand-alone stories, with reoccurring plot themes around a group of heroes battling a great evil while exploring the characters’ internal struggles and relationships. Final Fantasy is commercially and critically successful, with more than 135 million units sold making it one of the best-selling series of all time. Its innovation, visuals, and music, have been a driving force in the industry, and popularised the RPG genre as a whole in markets outside Japan.
