Suikoden II: Trial Version

げんそうすいでん II たいけんばん

A demo featuring a standard story preview and a custom “Battle Mode” with recalibrated enemies and a unique boss encounter. Bundled with Vandal Hearts II.

Description

Suikoden II: Trial Version is a localised demo released approximately eighteen months after the initial Japanese release, and two months prior to the PAL localised launch. It was packaged alongside select Konami releases, notably Metal Gear Solid in Japan and Vandal Hearts II in Europe. The demo, labeled as the “Trial Version” on the title screen, provides players an early taste of what would eventually become one of the most legendary and heavily sought-after JRPGs on the PlayStation.

The demo itself is split into two distinct options: a standard “Story Mode” (New Game) and a unique “Battle Mode.” Because saving is completely disabled, the Battle Mode is the main draw for preservationists and fans. It drops a leveled-up party directly into a slightly modified version of North Swallow Pass, appropriately renamed “Trial Road.” Konami completely recalibrated the enemy stats for this demo to sync with the party’s starting level, and added a few extra treasure chests to the map. At the end of the pass, players are treated to a custom appearance by the game’s notoriously brutal antagonist, Luca Blight, who taunts the party before unleashing the Double Head boss. Once defeated, Luca curses the player and vows revenge before the demo kicks back to the title screen.

Suikoden II would be later released but had a notoriously low print run in western territories, making it retrospectively one of the most expensive titles.
