Aquanaut no Kyuujitsu

アクアノートの休日

A pioneering digital experience that focuses on first-person underwater exploration and marine life interaction via a unique sonar system. It is a foundational title for ambient simulation, trading traditional objectives for a tranquil, self-directed journey through the deep sea.

Description

Aquanaut no Kyuujitsu, sold internationally as Aquanaut’s Holiday, is a landmark ‘non-game’ exploration simulator directed by Kazutoshi Iida (who later created Tail of the Sun and Doshin the Giant). The title was one of the earliest examples of software that prioritised atmosphere and relaxation over traditional win/loss objectives. In an era dominated by high-speed racers and combat-heavy titles, it served as a technical showcase for the PlayStation’s ability to render vast, 3D environments, establishing Artdink as a pioneer of experimental, open-ended experiences.

The narrative is intentionally minimalist, placing you in the role of a marine explorer who returns to the ocean for pure leisure. There are no overarching missions or pressing threats; instead, the story is told through the environments you discover. While much of the ocean floor is a tranquil blue expanse, players can encounter mysterious underwater ruins, ancient shipwrecks, and strange stone heads that suggest a hidden history beneath the waves. The atmosphere is defined by its quiet, oppressive solitude, occasionally punctuated by a minimalist ambient score that reinforces the feeling of being an isolated observer in a massive, indifferent ecosystem.

Gameplay is conducted from a first-person perspective as you pilot a small submersible. Your primary means of interaction is a four-tone sonar system mapped to the controller’s triggers, which allows you to communicate with over 200 species of marine life. By mimicking the sounds of different creatures, you can encourage them to follow your sub or perform specific behaviors. You also have the ability to build coral reefs, placing individual pieces of coral to attract specific types of fish and gradually expanding the biodiversity of your local area. The experience is entirely self-directed, with the only progress being the expansion of your Aqua Library as you identify new species and landmarks.

The title received polarised reviews. Some critics praised it as a groundbreaking digital vacation and a perfect stress-reliever, while others found the lack of traditional gameplay and the significant graphical pop-in to be tedious. Retrospectively, it is celebrated as a foundational title for the cozy and ambient genres that would become hugely popular decades later. It also influenced later underwater titles like Endless Ocean and Abzû. The franchise continued with a sequel on the PS1 and the highly sought-after Aquanaut’s Holiday: Hidden Memories on the PS3, though the original remains the most iconic for its role in defining the early PlayStation’s experimental library.
