A customisable robot battling experience that emphasises tactical squad management and part based construction. This title the popular portable series move into a 3D format, in addition to away from Nintendo consoles.
Description
Medarot R follows the competitive and social life of a young student who becomes a central figure in the world of high stakes robot duelling. While the story functions as an alternate retelling of events established in earlier handheld entries, it shifts the focus toward the character designs and aesthetic found in the concurrent anime series. The themes explore the bond between a human master and their mechanical companion as they navigate local tournaments and confront a persistent criminal organisation. This experience emphasises the transition from static sprite work to a more dynamic and cinematic representation of the world.
Combat takes place in 3D arenas where teams of three machines exchange attacks in a turn based structure. The core mechanic relies on the modular construction of robots from four distinct parts which determines their offensive capabilities and movement speed across different terrain types. A unique flashing icon system replaces the linear movement lines of previous entries to indicate the readiness of each unit for action. This version expands the available roster to include over two hundred individual designs, incorporating robots from both the first and second primary entries alongside many original creations. It is the first game in the franchise to appear on a non-Nintendo system and serves as a technical showcase for the transition of the series onto a 32-bit system. This title is closely related to its parts collection companion and preceded the eventual return of the series to portable systems.
Reviewers praised the game for its impressive three dimensional battle sequences and the inclusion of high quality voice acting from the animated cast. Some reviewers noted that the exploration in the 2D overworld felt dated compared to the modern polygonal combat and that the change in battle speed required adjustment for long term fans. The series remained Japan only and was up there with Pokémon for many years. Medarot R was the franchise’s brief move toward home console hardware that bridged the gap between the original games and its broader cultural presence in the anime.
