Gran Turismo 4 “Prologue” exists in large part because of the delays surrounding the full release of Gran Turismo 4. Polyphony Digital had been developing the main entry with ambitious scope, including hundreds of cars, expanded physics, and new tracks, but production setbacks pushed its launch further back than originally planned. This Prologue edition functioned as both a stopgap and a promotional tool, giving players early access to a curated selection of vehicles and circuits while demonstrating the technical refinements that the full game would eventually deliver. In this way, it maintained momentum for the series and public mindshare in advance of the game proper.

Gran Turismo 4 “Prologue” presents a condensed structure in which players access a limited roster of vehicles and circuits drawn from the forthcoming Gran Turismo 4. It familiarises players with the mechanics and presentation of the next main entry. Gameplay centres on the series’ hallmark of simulation fidelity, with detailed car physics, handling, and track design. The Prologue edition introduces driving lessons and challenges that encourage players to refine skills, effectively functioning as a training module. While the selection of cars and tracks is restricted compared to the full release, the emphasis lies in demonstrating graphical improvements, expanded physics modelling, and the depth of the driving school system.

Ultimately a demonstration of both a game and of a compromise, born of delay, but one that succeeds in sustaining anticipation and showcasing the evolving realism of the franchise.
