Description
Junjou Romantica: Koi no Doki Doki Daisakusen is a Japan-exclusive PlayStation 2 adventure title based on the Junjou Romantica franchise by Shungiku Nakamura. Rather than functioning as a straight retelling, it presents original game scenarios built around the series’ three featured storylines: Junjou Romantica, Junjou Egoist, and Junjou Terrorist. Each focuses on character-driven conflicts, misunderstandings, and emotional tension.
Gameplay follows a choice-based adventure format in which players progress through scenes by selecting dialogue and action options that affect how events unfold. It includes a touch system, where players can interact with characters during certain scenes to trigger reactions, increase affinity, or unlock special events. In addition, there are three minigames: Kuma Sagashi, Ahiru Shiwake, and Hige Panda Dance. These feed back into progression by helping players earn bookmarks and open additional story options. Despite all these mechanics, it is still primarily a story-and-character game, but the unlock systems, touch interactions, and side games give it a more interactive adventure than a passive visual novel.
The game was positioned as a fan-oriented companion release during the period when the franchise”s second anime season was airing in 2008, and it was issued in both standard and Limited Edition versions for the PS2 market in Japan. The Limited Edition included:
- a newly illustrated package by series creator Shungiku Nakamura
- a “Special Voice CD” featuring the six main characters (MI11B0105-05)
- a visual book containing selected illustrations and character-setting material
- three plastic mascot bookmarks
Reception was modest yet niche, with limited critical reviews. Users however praised the familiar cast, voice acting, and franchise appeal, while some also described the game as relatively short and mechanically simple compared with broader adventure titles.
