A first‑person roguelike that fuses the speed and immediacy of classic shooters with the unpredictability of dungeon crawling, creating a blend of twitch combat and procedural variety.
Description
Ziggurat casts the player as a novice sorcerer undergoing a rite of passage within a vast, shifting labyrinth. Each run through the dungeon is procedurally generated, with rooms filled with enemies, traps, and treasures. Combat is fast‑paced and reminiscent of 1990s shooters such as Heretic and Hexen, relying on strafing, quick reactions, and constant movement. Instead of guns, players wield a wide arsenal of magical staves, wands, and alchemical weapons, each with distinct firing patterns and resource costs. Levelling up grants access to randomly selected perks, ensuring that no two playthroughs unfold in the same way. Permadeath is central to the design, but each failure unlocks new weapons, characters, or upgrades, gradually expanding the pool of possibilities.
The game’s structure emphasises replayability. Different characters with unique traits can be unlocked, and an endless mode extends the challenge beyond the main campaign. While there is no multiplayer, online leaderboards allow players to compare scores, reinforcing its arcade sensibility. Compared to other roguelikes of its era, such as Rogue Legacy or Binding of Isaac, Ziggurat distinguishes itself by leaning into first‑person action rather than top‑down or side‑scrolling perspectives, making reflexes as important as long‑term planning. It was praised for its fluid combat, variety of weapons, and the way it channels the feel of classic fantasy shooters within a modern roguelike framework. It succeeds as both a homage to its inspirations and a distinctive entry in the roguelike genre, later spawning a sequel that built on its formula.
