Nioh
An action RPG that combines punishing, stance-based combat and loot-driven progression with a dark Sengoku-era setting infused with Japanese folklore, earning acclaim as both a historical reimagining and a worthy contemporary to Dark Souls.
Description
Nioh tells the story of William Adams, a foreign samurai navigating a war-torn Japan haunted by both real historical figures and supernatural yōkai. The game’s tone is grim and oppressive, reflecting the chaos of the Sengoku period while layering in mythological demons that heighten the sense of danger. Unlike the cryptic storytelling of Dark Souls, Nioh grounds its narrative in recognisable history, weaving in characters like Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari, while still embracing fantasy. This blend of fact and folklore gave the game a unique identity among its contemporaries.
Gameplay is defined by its technical combat system. Players master three stances (high, mid, and low) each altering speed, power, and defence, while carefully managing Ki (stamina) through the innovative Ki Pulse mechanic. The mission-based structure differs from the interconnected worlds of Souls games, instead offering discrete stages with replayable sub-missions. A heavy loot system, with randomized gear and rarity tiers, adds a layer of build experimentation reminiscent of Diablo. Combined with Team Ninja’s fast, reflex-driven combat heritage from Ninja Gaiden, Nioh created a hybrid experience that was both punishing and highly customizable.
Nioh was well received for its deep combat, rewarding challenge, and atmospheric setting, though some noted that its story felt secondary and its missions occasionally repetitive. It was widely regarded as one of the best Souls-inspired titles, carving out its own niche rather than being a clone. Its success led to Nioh 2 in 2020 and remastered editions on PS5 and PC, cementing its reputation as a cornerstone of modern action RPG design.
