A first-person shooter based upon the first World War, featuring both a single player campaign and robust multiplayer world.
Description
Battlefield 1 was unusual in that it set a modern multiplayer shooter in the First World War — a conflict less explored in mainstream games. Rather than focusing on futuristic weaponry or contemporary military settings (thanks COD), it draws on the mud, steel, and chaos of trench warfare, armoured assaults, and the dawn of mechanised combat. The game emphasises the brutality and futility of war, but also the human stories within it.
The single‑player campaign is structured as an anthology of “War Stories,” each focusing on a different perspective: a tank crew in France, an Italian shock trooper in the Alps, a Bedouin fighter alongside Lawrence of Arabia, and others. This fragmented approach avoids creating a single hero protagonist, instead emphasising the diversity of experiences and the personal cost of global conflict.
Gameplay is defined by the series’ trademark scale, but filtered through WWI technology. Bolt‑action rifles, early machine guns, flamethrowers, and experimental gadgets create a slower, more deliberate rhythm than contemporary shooters. Horses, biplanes, and lumbering tanks expand the battlefield, while massive vehicles “Behemoths” such as airships, dreadnoughts, and armoured trains, each act as dramatic turning points in matches. Compared to contemporaries like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which embraces sci‑fi futurism, Battlefield 1 stands it ground on emphasising historical authenticity.
Within the Battlefield series, Battlefield 1 revitalised the franchise by proving that historical warfare can be both commercially viable and mechanically fresh. Its dual emphasis on atmospheric single‑player storytelling and expansive multiplayer combat influences later entries, including Battlefield V. Reception was strong, with praise directed as its atmosphere, visuals, and willingness to approach WWI. This makes it one of the more distinctive Battlefield entries, for its haunting campaign vignettes and its ability to make a century‑old conflict feel immediate and relevant to modern players.
