Atom Smasher
A single-screen arcade shooter set inside a failing nuclear reactor, where the player must delay a meltdown by destroying protons while avoiding electrons and encroaching molten debris.
विवरण
Atom Smasher places you in control of a small multidirectional “super laser” surrounding an unstable atomic nucleus. Shooting the central proton slows the meltdown but releases another orbiting electron, steadily increasing the number of hazards. Contact with an electron costs a life, while accidentally shooting one temporarily accelerates the reactor’s collapse. Molten debris gradually advances from the edges of the screen and ends the game if it reaches the nucleus. It can be destroyed with the laser or, uniquely in the CPC version, broken by ramming through it. Firing continuously overheats the weapon, while movement consumes fuel that is replenished by remaining stationary. Survival therefore depends on balancing movement, shooting, cooling, and refuelling as the screen becomes increasingly crowded.
The unusual reactor theme and overlapping resource systems give the game more depth than its sparse appearance suggests, but the tiny player cursor, severe collision detection, awkward controls, and rapidly escalating difficulty make it quite unforgiving. Since the reactor cannot ultimately be saved, play is entirely score-based and centred on delaying the inevitable for as long as possible. Ultimately it is an inventive early CPC shooter, though a struggle to pick up today, with the precision required excessive and the steadily losing struggle discouraging. Maybe this intersection of atomic energy and fatalism reflects an aspect of the era it came from.
