Digital Monster Ver. 2

デジタルモンスター Ver.2

A single‑game electronic device that is the second instalment in the original series of Digimon virtual pets.

Description

Digital Monster Ver. 2, originally released in Japan in December 1997, features 14 trainable Digimon and is renowned for introducing some of the most iconic “rival” characters in the franchise. This version centers on Punimon and Tsunomon as its base forms, branching into popular Child (Rookie) Digimon like Gabumon and Elecmon. The device follows the established five-stage evolution cycle, progressing from a hatching egg through Baby I, Baby II, Child, Adult (Champion), and the challenging Perfect (Ultimate) stage.

Version 2 is distinguished by its “Power Punch” training minigame, which requires players to time a button press to stop a rapidly moving meter at the highest possible point to maximize the Digimon’s strength. This version is particularly famous among collectors for the debut of SkullGreymon, a powerful skeletal dragon that serves as a “dark” evolution for several Adult forms. To reach the highest evolutionary tiers, such as MetalMamemon, Giromon, or the elusive Vademon, the pet requires rigorous management, typically necessitating at least 15 battles during both its Child and Adult stages with a high win percentage. Like its peers, it retains the signature “Battle Connect” metal contacts for linking with other original virtual pets for combat.

This specific Digital Monster Ver. 2 is the official “Asian-English” export variant localised by Bandai Hong for the East Asian and Australian markets. While it carries the #1856 model number consistent with other international releases, this version features the distinct bilingual English and Traditional Chinese documentation unique to the Hong Kong distribution wave.
