AV Cable
Audio and/or video cables. Prior to the widespread adoption of HDMI, game consoles supported an array of analogue connections often via proprietary ports. The earliest systems supported simple RF output for a TV to tune into, often with the ability to switch with TV antenna, preventing interference. Direct connections were vastly better and more convenient and composite video cables were provided standard with every console until the move to HDMI. However they increasingly became the option of last resort, with alternatives available for purchase providing significantly better quality. Y/C (s-video), RGB (SCART/VGA), and YPbPr (component/D-terminal) provided better picture quality and in some cases progressive scan or high definition (1080i, 720p, 1080p).
