Description
Interstate ‘76 is set in an alternate version of the American Southwest during the mid‑1970s, where the oil crisis has spiralled into lawlessness and vigilantes patrol the highways in weaponised muscle cars. The player takes on the role of Groove Champion, a reluctant driver drawn into the world of auto‑justice after the murder of his sister Jade. Guided by her partner Taurus, Groove inherits her car and gradually learns to survive in a landscape dominated by gangs, mercenaries, and corrupt interests. The campaign, known as T.R.I.P., unfolds across a series of missions that mix convoy protection, duels, and large‑scale battles, all underscored by a funk soundtrack that reinforces the period setting.
The game’s mechanics drew heavily from the engine of MechWarrior 2, adapting its detailed damage modelling and loadout customisation to cars rather than mechs. Players could swap weapons, armour, and engines, with damage affecting both performance and appearance. This level of simulation distinguished it from more arcade‑oriented contemporaries like Twisted Metal, positioning it closer to a tactical driving experience. Its presentation leaned into the style of 1970s television serials, complete with grainy cutscenes, slang‑heavy dialogue, and a soundtrack that evoked blaxploitation cinema.
At the time the game was well received, praised for its atmosphere, soundtrack, and depth of customisation, though some noted its steep learning curve. It later spawned an expansion, Nitro Pack (reissued as Nitro Riders), and a Gold Edition bundling both. I originally had the big box retail release traded it upon getting this bundled copy. We played them over LAN and remember it fondly.
Interstate ‘76 is somewhat of a cult classic, emblematic of a period when PC developers experimented with genre hybrids, in this case marrying simulation depth with a playful, era‑specific style, leaving a lasting impression despite its relatively short series lifespan.
