Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

A pulp‑horror side story FPS that is a love letter to Castle Wolfenstein, Nazi occult tropes, and B‑movie excess. It trades the gravitas of The New Order for relentless action and supernatural spectacle, making it both a nostalgic throwback and a thematic experiment within the series.

Description

Set in an alternate 1946, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood follows B.J. Blazkowicz as he infiltrates Castle Wolfenstein to uncover intelligence on Deathshead’s compound. The story unfolds in two linked campaigns: Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves and The Dark Secrets of Helga von Schabbs, which shift from espionage and prison breaks into occult horror. While The New Order leaned into dystopian gravitas, The Old Blood deliberately embraces a pulpy, exaggerated tone, drawing on classic horror cinema and the franchise’s roots in Nazi occultism.

The first half of the game is grounded in infiltration and resistance, with B.J. navigating the labyrinthine corridors of Castle Wolfenstein. This setting is a deliberate callback to Wolfenstein 3D, evoking nostalgia through its architecture, secret passages, and militarised guards. The second half pivots sharply into horror, as Helga von Schabbs’ excavation of ancient crypts unleashes undead monstrosities. This tonal shift transforms the game from a war story into a supernatural thriller, echoing B‑movie tropes of Nazi zombies and cursed relics.

Mechanically, The Old Blood retains the fast‑paced gunplay of The New Order but introduces new tools, most notably the pipe, which doubles as a melee weapon and climbing implement. Combat is relentless, with waves of Supersoldaten, Panzerhunds, and eventually zombie‑like Shamblers. The design emphasises high‑octane action over narrative subtlety, keeping players in near‑constant firefights.

Thematically, the game explores the intersection of science, myth, and fear. While the supernatural elements are presented as occult horror, they are often implied to have scientific explanations, blurring the line between mysticism and technology — a recurring motif in Wolfenstein. The tone is deliberately pulpish and exaggerated, with cartoonish villains, grotesque experiments, and a heightened sense of spectacle. Where The New Order humanised its cast and leaned into tragedy, The Old Blood revels in B‑movie excess, positioning itself as both homage and pastiche.

Praise was directed toward the game’s combat intensity, nostalgic setting, and horror‑tinged atmosphere, though some felt the story lacked the emotional depth of The New Order. The tonal shift into pulp horror was divisive: for some, it was a refreshing return to the series’ roots; for others, it felt less substantial. Still, it was recognised as a solid standalone expansion that bridged the gap between the grounded dystopia of The New Order and the franchise’s long history of occult pulp.
