A cinematic space combat title that reimagines a classic shooter lineage as a fully three‑dimensional dogfighting experience, blending arcade immediacy with a more narrative‑driven campaign.
Description
Project Sylpheed is a curious blend of old-school arcade approaches and modern presentation, wrapped in the polish of a mid-2000s console space shooter. It channels the spirit of classic rail shooters like Silpheed and Star Fox, but reimagines them with full 3D movement, cinematic storytelling, and a heavier narrative emphasis. The result is a game that often feels torn between its arcade roots and its ambition to tell a sprawling space opera. Yet when the two align, like during hectic large-scale dogfights, it captures a real sense of chaos and velocity.
What stands out, even now, is the sheer scale of the battles. Dozens of ships fill the screen at once, with missiles, lasers, and debris crisscrossing the void in a way that borders on overwhelming, albeit maybe not bullet hell. The controls can feel cluttered at first, but gradually reveal a layer of depth. While it didn’t quite make a lasting mark in the genre, Project Sylpheed remains a decent attempt to bring space combat back into the more modern spotlight.
