Gears of War 4 marked the beginning of a new saga, shifting the focus from Marcus Fenix to his son JD, while introducing fresh enemies and gameplay refinements. The game is set 25 years after the events of Gears of War 3, in a world reshaped by the destruction of Imulsion. Humanity survives in walled cities under the Coalition of Ordered Governments, while “Outsiders” live beyond its control. JD Fenix, alongside Kait Diaz and Del Walker, confronts the Swarm, a terrifying new force linked to the Locust. The narrative blends family legacy with survival horror, positioning Marcus as a grizzled mentor figure.

The gameplay retains the series’ hallmark cover‑based shooting, but adds innovations like close‑cover combat moves, shoulder charges, and new weapons such as the Dropshot (explosive drills) and Buzzkill (ricocheting sawblades). Dynamic weather effects called Windflares alter combat conditions, forcing players to adapt to violent storms that could deflect projectiles. Multiplayer is a major focus. Horde 3.0 expanded the cooperative survival mode to five players online, introducing character classes, skill cards, and deployable fortifications. Versus multiplayer runs at 60fps on dedicated servers, with a visible ranking system to balance matchmaking. The campaign also supports two‑player co‑op locally or online.

Reception was generally positive with the refinements to the combat mechanics, visuals, and set‑pieces. It successfully revitalised the franchise after Epic Games’ departure, paving the way for Gears 5 in 2019.

This physical release effectively provided the entire anthology of Gears titles, including 4K updates for the two prequels, making it outstanding value for newcomers.
