Kuru Kuru Land

クルクルランド

A 1984 Famicom puzzle-action game from Nintendo, where players guide a balloonfish named Gloopy/Bubbles through underwater mazes to uncover hidden gold ingots while avoiding enemies and hazards.

Description

Kuru Kuru Land (better known internationally as Clu Clu Land) has a simple but quirky premise: in the undersea kingdom of Kuru Kuru Land, sea urchins called Unira have stolen treasure, and it’s up to the heroine to recover it. Each stage hides gold ingots arranged in patterns (hearts, mushrooms, etc.), and the player must reveal them all to clear the level. The title “Kuru Kuru” comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia for “spinning around,” which reflects the core mechanic: your character doesn’t move freely but instead grabs onto posts and swings around them to change direction. This unusual control scheme gave the game a distinctive feel compared to contemporaries like Pac-Man, which it otherwise resembles in its maze-chase structure.

Gameplay mixes puzzle-solving with arcade reflexes. You must avoid Unira and black holes, but you can stun enemies with a sonic wave and push them into walls for points. Later levels increase complexity by requiring you to pass over ingots multiple times to flip them correctly. Bonus rounds reward quick completion, and the game’s difficulty ramps up steadily. Compared to other early Famicom titles like Ice Climber or Balloon Fight, Kuru Kuru Land stood out for its unusual movement system and pattern-revealing puzzles.

It was one of Nintendo’s early Famicom releases, arriving in 1984 in Japan and later as a launch title for the NES in North America. It was developed internally at Nintendo, with the “Kuru Kuru” naming later echoed in Kuru Kuru Kururin on Game Boy Advance. Expanded versions appeared in arcades (VS. Clu Clu Land) and on the Famicom Disk System (Welcome to New Clu Clu Land), which added puzzles and difficulty options.

At the time it received modest but positive interest, with its replay value and originality. It never reached the iconic status of Donkey Kong or Super Mario Bros., but it has remained a cult curiosity, resurfacing on Virtual Console, the Famicom Mini series, and Nintendo Switch Online. Its heroine, Bubbles, even cameoed in later Nintendo titles like DK: King of Swing.
