Ikki
いっきA Sunsoft arcade and Famicom action game where peasant farmers revolt against their feudal lord, battling ninjas with auto‑aiming sickles in a quirky, chaotic top‑down scramble that became infamous in Japan as a “kusoge” (lit. shit game – so‑bad‑it’s‑good) cult classic.
Description
Originally released in Japanese arcades and quickly ported to the Famicom, Ikki (いっき, meaning “riot” or “insurrection”) casts you as Gonbe, joined by Tago in two‑player mode, leading a one‑man uprising in medieval Japan. Instead of samurai, you face endless waves of ninjas, wild boars, and supernatural hazards while collecting koban coins and dodging traps. The arcade version featured a mini‑map and more enemy variety, while the Famicom port, developed by Tose, stripped some features and drew criticism for its clumsy controls and difficulty, cementing its “kusoge” reputation.
Despite its rough edges, Ikki endured in Japanese gaming culture through re‑releases, mobile adaptations, and affectionate parody. Its unusual vertical text, jidaigeki‑style dialogue, and absurd premise gave it a distinct personality, and it even saw a modern revival with Ikki Unite (2023), a multiplayer roguelike reinterpretation. As part of Sunsoft’s history, it sits alongside other eccentric titles like Atlantis no Nazo, representing a slice of mid‑’80s Japanese arcade‑to‑console design that’s both frustrating and endearing.
