The third entry in the Mario Kart series and the first on a handheld platform.

Description

Mario Kart Advance, known internally as Mario Kart: Super Circuit, had a lot to live up and generally delivered, combining the aesthetic of the original Super Mario Kart with the mechanics of Mario Kart 64. The game features 20 new tracks alongside all 20 courses from the original SNES title as unlockable content, making it one of the earliest examples of retro content integration in the series. As a technical showcase for the GBA, Mario Kart Advance demonstrated the system’s ability to handle fast-paced, mode-7-style racing with ease.

The game supports basically everything. Up to four players via link cable, including the Single-Pak feature where only one cartridge is required. Mario Kart delivered one of the better Single-Pak multi-player experiences despite the hardware limitations. Map and character selection was substantially limited compared to multi cartridge play, but still, you actually had multi-player Mario Kart running from RAM on the GBA. Pretty impressive stuff. The Japanese version also supported the Mobile Adapter GB, allowing limited online functionality via mobile phones. This hardware was not available in other regions and the feature stripped from international versions of the game. Finally, this game supported added features when run on the GameCube’s Game Boy Player, specifically adding rumble feedback when played with a GameCube controller.

As the first portable entry in the franchise, the game really pushed the limits and impressed in multiple ways, balancing technical ambition with accessible design.
