Controller Pak

コントローラパック

A memory accessory designed to store and share save data for games without an internal battery backup.

Description

The Controller Pak for the Nintendo 64 is a small cartridge that fits into the rear slot of the N64 controller. It provides non‑volatile memory storage, allowing players to save progress in titles that do not include built‑in save capacity. The unit contains 32 kilobytes of SRAM, divided into 123 pages, with each game using a set number of pages depending on its requirements.

There is no system save data memory manager. Players access the data through in‑game menus, and many titles include utilities to manage or erase files. The accessory is closely related to memory cards used in other consoles of the period, such as the PlayStation, but differs in being inserted directly into the controller rather than the console. It is however unusual in that other systems being disc based required memory cards for saving where Nintendo 64 cartridges could have their own save memory storage.

At release the Controller Pak was considered necessary but overtime their relevance seemed to diminish. Reviewers noted that many Nintendo 64 titles included internal battery saves, reducing reliance on the accessory. Today it is remembered as a functional but secondary component of the system, recognised for its role in supporting specific titles, for its distinctive design as part of the controller itself, and how approaches to save data management varied in the late 1990s.
