Bakugan: Defenders of the Core
A portable action-adventure where players sneak through enemy zones and use touchscreen-powered real-time battles to command giant Bakugan against the Vexos.
Description
The DS edition of Bakugan: Defenders of the Core offered a portable spin on the console experience, reshaping the mix of stealth and combat to fit the handheld’s hardware. Players guided their custom hero through missions that alternated between sneaking past enemy patrols and engaging in large-scale Bakugan battles. The stealth sections leaned into puzzle-like design, where you distracted guards, avoided drones, and collected items to progress. Once combat began, the game shifted into real-time 3D fights where you directly controlled your Bakugan, chaining together light and heavy attacks, projectiles, and special moves.
What set the DS version apart was its use of the touchscreen. Ability cards and special attacks were activated with taps and swipes, giving battles a tactile feel. There was also a light strategic layer, such as placing hologram buildings to divert enemy attention during fights. Multiplayer was supported through local wireless play, allowing head-to-head or team battles once Bakugan were unlocked in story mode.
Visually, the handheld version scaled down the anime-inspired style of the console games, relying on text-driven cutscenes rather than full voice acting. Reception was mixed due to the repetitive gameplay and camera limitations. The PSP was comparatively quite good, reflecting the home console version.
