Nintendo GameCube
ニンテンドー ゲームキューブNintendo’s sixth‑generation home console. This is my original launch unit, pre-ordered and received a few days after the Japanese launch.
Description
The Nintendo GameCube was Nintendo’s entry into the sixth generation, released in September 2001. Codenamed Dolphin during development, it marked a shift away from cartridges by adopting proprietary 8 cm optical discs that held 1.5 GB of data. The system was powered by IBM’s custom “Gekko” CPU and ATI’s “Flipper” GPU, giving it strong 3D performance for its compact size. Unlike its competitors, the GameCube was focused purely on gaming and it did not double as a DVD or CD player. It continued Nintendo’s tradition of four controller ports for local multiplayer. Its distinctive cube‑like design, available in colours such as Indigo, Black, and later Spice Orange, made it one of Nintendo’s most recognisable consoles.
The system ended up with a nice range of accessories, which I have most of, including the Game Boy Player and a modem/broadband adaptor that enabled limited online play in games such as Phantasy Star Online. I have fond memories of the console at the time, with a constant series of games being imported every month.
