Description

World League Basketball is a basketball simulation, known in North America as NCAA Basketball and in Japan as Super Dunk Shot. It was groundbreaking for being the first console basketball game to use a fully rotatable, behind‑the‑player 3D court view via the SNES’s Mode 7 graphics, a perspective that later became standard in sports titles. The PAL version replaces U.S. college teams with fictional professional squads from around the world, and players can compete in exhibition matches or full seasons against the CPU or another player. Gameplay focuses on dribbling, passing, and scoring within timed quarters, with adjustable difficulty and the ability to save progress, offering a then‑innovative blend of presentation and playability.

Despite being available in other regions during the PAL SNES launch in 1992, this version of the game did not release until late July 1993 in Europe. In Australia, releases usually lagged by a few weeks. The local Nintendo magazine September 1993 issue listed it as ‘out now’, reflecting an August production period and major retailer catalogues like Myer and Grace Bros from Aug–Sept 1993 also reflect a local release in late August 1993. The price was generally AU$99–109.

This copy is Mattel branded i.e. reflects a very early copy, likely in the first batch. By early 1994 all new SNES releases were under Nintendo Australia branding, though Mattel‑branded stock lingered in shops for a while. The box I have is an original purchase – I have owned it since 1993. We rediscovered a handful of pre-1994 SNES boxes a couple decades later and have slowly re-purchased the appropriate matched games over time.
