Dragon Quest Builders 2
ドラゴンクエストビルダーズ2A sandbox action RPG sequel that expands the original’s building and crafting systems with farming, flowing water, gliding, and online co‑op for up to four players, set after Dragon Quest II and starring the Builder alongside their enigmatic ally Malroth.
Description
Dragon Quest Builders 2 is set after the events of Dragon Quest II, where the cult known as the Children of Hargon seeks to eradicate creation itself. Players take on the role of a young Builder who escapes captivity and washes ashore on the Isle of Awakening, where they meet Malroth, a mysterious amnesiac who becomes both a combat ally and a central figure in the story.
The sequel expands significantly on the mechanics of the original Dragon Quest Builders. It introduces farming, flowing water, swimming, gliding, and an optional first‑person perspective, while combat is enhanced by Malroth’s constant AI support. Exploration is broader, with themed islands to restore, retro‑style maps for fast travel, and blueprint‑based construction that allows for more ambitious projects. The game also adds online multiplayer for up to four players, enabling collaborative building, as well as community features such as photo mode, blueprint sharing, and a cross‑platform bulletin board. These refinements made the sequel more expansive and flexible, while retaining the charm of combining Dragon Quest’s RPG heritage with creative sandbox design.
I made the mistake of getting the sequel on the Switch after getting the prequel on PlayStation 4. Unfortunately towards the mid- and late-game this games performance can become quite poor, with output inappropriate for the hardware’s performance capacity. Nonetheless, Dragon Quest Builders 2 was both a commercial and critical success, deepening the existing formula and offering a more cooperative experience. It sold over one million copies within its first year and established itself as a definitive refinement of the Builders concept.
