Pikmin 1 + 2
ピクミン1+2Faithful HD remasters of the series’ GameCube originals, that maintain the tone and structure while modernising controls.
Description
Pikmin 1 + 2 sees the original GameCube titles (later patched for Wii) HD remastered with modern play controls. A literal compilation with each game appearing separately on the Switch menu, but they’re sold together as a unified package. These versions are based on the New Play Control! Wii ports, but with further refinements to match the control schemes of Pikmin 3 Deluxe and Pikmin 4. Motion controls are optional, and camera movement is now mapped to the right stick, improving playability across handheld and docked modes.
In Pikmin 1, players guide Captain Olimar across a hostile planet, recovering spaceship parts with the help of colour‑coded Pikmin. The tone is melancholic and survivalist, a lone explorer racing against time, with nature as both ally and threat. This is juxtaposed by Pikmin 2, which shifts toward capitalist absurdity, as Olimar returns to collect “treasures” (discarded human objects) to pay off corporate debt. survival and exploitation. It introduces co‑op mechanics, two new Pikmin types, and underground cave systems that emphasise resource management and puzzle solving.
Both games retain their original pacing and structure, with minimal narrative changes. However, some treasures in Pikmin 2 were altered or renamed, likely due to licensing or cultural adjustments. Notably, the songs “Ai no Uta” and “Tane no Uta” are absent from these versions. The remaster preserves these tones while smoothing the interface for modern players. Visually, the games benefit from HD resolution but retain their original art direction of soft textures, organic environments, and expressive Pikmin animations.
While the games show their age in some mechanics, their charm, pacing, and environmental storytelling remain intact. It completed the modern releases of the series after the Switch port of the Wii U Pikmin 3 (2013) three years prior. The release also served as a lead‑in to Pikmin 4, which released a month later.
