A 3D fighting game built around aerial combat in enclosed arenas, combining traditional close‑quarters attacks with long‑range psychic projectiles.
Description
Psychic Force 2012 was the sequel to Taito’s 1996 arcade title Psychic Force. The game placed players in cubic arenas suspended in mid‑air, where combatants could fly freely in all directions. Battles emphasised both melee and ranged psychic attacks, with characters wielding elemental powers such as fire, wind, and lightning.
The Dreamcast version was one of the system’s early fighting titles, showcasing its 3D capabilities with fully polygonal characters and environments. The control system was refined from the original, introducing a dual‑gauge mechanic: a life bar and a psycho gauge, the latter fuelling special moves and super attacks. As health decreased, the psycho gauge expanded, allowing for more powerful techniques. Matches could end dramatically with finishing moves that smashed opponents through the arena walls. The roster expanded on the first game, featuring returning characters alongside new fighters, each with distinct psychic abilities and storylines. The story was delivered through arcade‑style sequences, with the setting advanced to the year 2012, where rival psychic factions battled for dominance.
Presentation leaned heavily on anime aesthetics, with character designs and cut‑ins reinforcing the stylised tone. The soundtrack by Hideki Takahagi supported the high‑energy combat, while the Dreamcast hardware delivered smoother performance and sharper visuals than the arcade original. The game provided originality in the free‑floating arena concept and a good visual spectacle, but the mechanics could feel shallow compared to more grounded 3D fighters of the era such as SoulCalibur or Virtua Fighter 3tb. The PlayStation adaptation, retitled Psychic Force 2, added extra modes and characters but downgraded the graphics.
