Crayon Shin-chan – Taiketsu! Kantamu Panic!!
クレヨンしんちゃんA mini‑game collection starring Shin‑chan containing eleven quirky challenges and a lighthearted adaptation of the anime’s comedy.
Description
Crayon Shin-chan: Taiketsu! Kantam Panic!! is a Japan-exclusive Game Gear title based on the popular Crayon Shin-chan anime. It was one of several licensed Shin‑chan games of the 1990s, but notable for being the only one on Sega’s handheld. The title references “Kantam Robo,” a parody mecha within the anime, and the game’s framing story involves Shin‑chan competing in a series of contests inspired by his imagination and antics. The game features a collection of eleven lighthearted mini-games themed around Shin-chan’s antics and his obsession with the in-universe superhero Kantam Robo.
Mini-games include Worm Racing, Ball Catching, Freestyle Paddling, Balloon Pumping, Target Shooting, Beach Battle (a Battleship‑style board game), Maze Tagging, Number Bowling, Snowball Fighting, Music Matching, and Robo Boxing. Each is designed with simple mechanics and quick reflex challenges suited to short play sessions. They can be played sequentially in story mode or be replayed in a practice mode.
Visually, the game adopts a bright, cartoonish style faithful to the anime, with Shin‑chan’s exaggerated expressions and comedic animations central to the presentation. The Game Gear’s limited resolution is used effectively, with bold sprites and simple backgrounds that keep the action readable on the handheld screen. Sound effects and short musical loops reinforce the playful tone, though the audio is minimal compared to console adaptations. The game supported up to two players via the Game Gear link cable, though most players experienced it as a single‑player title. Its design placed it closer to a handheld party game than a traditional platformer or action title, distinguishing it from other Shin‑chan releases of the era.
While modest in size, the game captures the humour and energy of the series, offering a playful mix of parody and slapstick that aligns with Shin-chan’s character. The game was primarily aimed at younger fans of the anime. It did not see release outside Japan, but it has since gained an English fan translation was later produced, making the mini‑games accessible to a wider audience.
