Sonic Spinball

ソニックスピンボール

A pinball‑platformer spin‑off where Sonic battles through Robotnik’s Veg‑O‑Fortress, remembered as a quirky stopgap between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3.

Description

Sonic Spinball, also marketed as Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, is a pinball‑themed action game developed by the American staff of Sega Technical Institute in collaboration with Polygames. The game was commissioned when Sega realised Sonic the Hedgehog 3 would not be ready for the 1993 holiday season. Drawing inspiration from the popular “Casino Night Zone” in Sonic 2, the developers built a full game around Sonic acting as the pinball.

The story sees Dr. Robotnik constructing the Veg‑O‑Fortress atop Mount Mobius, powered by magma and Chaos Emerald energy. The fortress doubles as a giant pinball machine, defended by traps and robotic guardians. Sonic, launched into the fortress after an aerial approach with Tails, must collect Chaos Emeralds across four large pinball‑table stages (Toxic Caves, Lava Powerhouse, The Machine, and Showdown) before confronting Robotnik.

Gameplay blends traditional Sonic platforming with pinball mechanics. Players use flippers to propel Sonic through ramps, bumpers, and hazards, while also navigating platforming sections to hit switches, collect emeralds, and defeat bosses. Bonus stages styled after classic pinball tables are also included.

Although praised for its inventive concept, graphics, and music, it had stiff controls and physics compared with traditional pinball and mainline Sonic titles. Despite this, Sonic Spinball sold strongly during the holiday season in the US. In Japan the market responded less to such gimmicks, despite the title being somewhat novel. It has been re‑released physically on several consoles, including Game Boy Advance and GameCube, and later through Wii Virtual Console, Steam, and Nintendo Switch Online.
