A 1993 Sega tactical RPG that expands on its predecessor with a freer world, deeper mechanics, and a mythic tale of a broken seal unleashing the demon king Zeon, cementing its reputation as one of the Mega Drive’s most enduring classics.
Description
Shining Force II: Inishie no Fūin (lit. The Ancient Seal) is a tactical RPG and the direct sequel to Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention, though its story is largely self‑contained. The Japanese subtitle “Inishie no Fūin” refers to the breaking of an ancient magical seal, which unleashes the demon king Zeon and sets the stage for the conflict.
The narrative begins when a thief named Slade steals the jewels of Light and Darkness from a shrine near Granseal Castle, inadvertently breaking the seal that had imprisoned Zeon. This act triggers a chain of disasters, forcing the young hero Bowie and his companions to form a new Shining Force to combat the spreading evil. Unlike the first game, Shining Force II abandons the rigid chapter structure, allowing players to explore a more open world, revisit earlier locations, and uncover hidden characters and treasures.
Gameplay retains the grid‑based tactical battles of its predecessor but expands the scope with a larger roster of recruitable characters, more varied classes, and additional spells and abilities. The promotion system returns, enabling characters to evolve into advanced forms, while exploration between battles is more free‑form, giving the game a stronger sense of continuity and adventure.
The game blends high fantasy with mythic undertones, emphasising the consequences of human folly and the cyclical struggle against ancient evils. Its colourful graphics, memorable soundtrack by Motoaki Takenouchi, and refined mechanics earned it critical acclaim. Over time, it has been hailed as one of the finest examples of the 16‑bit tactical RPG, ranking highly in retrospective lists and enjoying multiple re‑releases on platforms such as the Wii Virtual Console, Steam, and Nintendo Switch Online.
