Saturn 3D Control Pad
3D Saturn controller with analogue controls.
Description
The Sega Saturn 3D Control Pad, commonly called the 3D Controller and in Japan sold as the Multi Controller, was a notable piece of hardware introduced alongside Nights into Dreams and it marked a significant step in the evolution of game controllers. The controller introduced a large, disc-shaped analog thumb pad, which was quite different from the traditional analog sticks seen in later controllers. It also retained the Saturn’s standard D-pad, six face buttons, and two shoulder triggers, along with a switch that allowed players to toggle between analog and digital modes for compatibility with older Saturn titles.
While it was only supported by a limited number of games, the 3D Control Pad was notable for pushing the industry toward analog controls at a critical time. It arrived around the same period as Nintendo’s N64 controller and Sony’s Dual Analog controller, signalling a broader shift toward more precise input in 3D environments. Though the Saturn’s late hardware updates meant the pad didn’t become a widespread standard, its influence can be clearly seen in the Sega Dreamcast controller, which borrowed much of its shape and layout.
