Controller
コントローラーThe original gamepad controller for the PlayStation. This model was only released in Japan with the later western SCPH-1080 model have a number of minor changes.
Description
The PlayStation Controller SCPH-1010 is the original gamepad released for Sony’s first PlayStation in Japan, launching alongside the console in late-1994. It established the basic PlayStation input layout: a digital directional pad, four face buttons marked with the now-iconic triangle, circle, cross, and square symbols, Start and Select, and two pairs of shoulder buttons.
More than just a controller, it effectively introduced the visual language and physical template that would define the PlayStation brand for decades. Its design was notable for adapting the familiar pad layout of earlier consoles while adding features better suited to the PlayStation’s push into 3D gaming. The second pair of shoulder buttons was intended to improve depth-oriented control, while the controller’s hand grips helped offset the less stable hold created by using both index and middle fingers on the shoulders. The face symbols were also given specific meanings by designer Teiyu Goto: circle and cross represented “yes” and “no” in Japanese usage, triangle symbolised viewpoint, and square was likened to a sheet of paper used for menus. These icons were part of a deliberate interface philosophy that became inseparable from PlayStation itself.
It would later be succeeded first by the revised international SCPH-1080, which slightly increased in size for the Western market and more notably the cable length. The overall design would be built upon later by Sony’s analogue-focused controllers such as the Dual Analog and ultimately the DualShock, which became the PlayStation standard from 1997 onward. Retrospectively, these original controllers reflect the purest expression of the early PlayStation era, establishing foundational ergonomics, iconography, and hardware identity.
