Mindjack

マインドジャック

A near‑future third‑person shooter built around hacking mechanics and cooperative play.

Description

Mindjack is set in a futuristic, cyberpunk‑styled world where where governments and corporations battle for control. Players take on the role of a government agent, Jim Corbijn, an agent caught in a conspiracy who has the ability to “mindjack” or take control of other characters’ minds. The presentation emphasises futuristic cityscapes, digital overlays, and the concept of “mind hacking” as a central theme.

Gameplay combines cover‑based shooting with the ability to hack into enemies, civilians, and even mechanical units. This mechanic allows players to switch bodies mid‑battle, turning foes into allies or inhabiting drones for tactical advantage. The game also features drop‑in online play, where other players can join as allies or enemies, blurring the line between single player and multiplayer. It is closely related to contemporaries such as Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days and Binary Domain, but distinguished itself with its hacking system.

At release the game was criticised for clunky controls, dated visuals, and repetitive mission design, though some reviewers praised its experimental ideas and online integration. Retrospectively it is a flawed but ambitious attempt to merge shooter mechanics with unique online features. A title that tried to innovate within the genre but struggled with execution, standing as a curiosity in Square Enix’s catalogue.
