The first expansion pack to Command & Conquer: Red Alert, adding new missions, maps, and the hidden “ant” scenarios without altering the game’s mechanics.
Description
Command & Conquer: Red Alert – Counterstrike was the first official expansion pack for Red Alert. It was conceived as a companion to the base game, offering new missions and scenarios rather than altering the mechanics or introducing new units. In that sense, it functioned as a content‑driven extension, broadening the scope of the alternate‑history Cold War conflict without reshaping its tactical foundations.
The expansion added sixteen single‑player missions, split between the Allies and the Soviets. These missions were designed to be challenging, often requiring players to adapt to unusual conditions or asymmetric starting positions. For the PVP side, it included more than one hundred multiplayer maps. Unlike its successor The Aftermath, Counterstrike did not add new technologies or units, which makes it feel more like a curated campaign anthology than a rebalancing of the game’s sandbox. The expansion also featured new music tracks by Frank Klepacki, extending the industrial‑techno atmosphere that had become a hallmark of the series.
One of the curiosities of Counterstrike was the inclusion of two hidden “It Came From Red Alert” missions, which parody 1950s science‑fiction monster films. To access them, players had to click on the speaker in the Counterstrike menu screen, which unlocked a secret campaign. In these missions, the Soviets and Allies are forced to deal with swarms of oversized ants that behave like regular enemy units but are reskinned with insect sprites. The ants come in different types like soldier ants, fire ants, and queen ants, each with distinct abilities. The scenarios are tongue‑in‑cheek, with objectives like destroying ant colonies or defending bases against waves of insect attackers.
Counterstrike was Westwood’s first attempt to extend Red Alert beyond its original release, experimenting with mission design and tone, while still keeping the core mechanics intact. It remained firmly rooted in the original formula, offering players more of what they already loved but framed in inventive scenarios.
