A civilian flight simulator that refines the series with expanded global scenery, a larger aircraft roster, and support for force‑feedback joysticks and 3D graphics cards, making it both more realistic and more accessible to hobbyists.
Description
Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 builds on the Windows 95 edition but pushes the series into a more modern era. The most striking change is the dramatic expansion of scenery: the simulator now includes thousands of airports across the globe and dozens of detailed metropolitan areas, many of which had previously only been available as separate add‑on packs. This makes long‑haul flights and international routes far more immersive.
The aircraft roster grows significantly. Alongside staples like the Cessna Skylane, FS98 introduces the Learjet 45 business jet, replacing the older Learjet 35, and the Bell 206B JetRanger III helicopter, marking the first time helicopters are officially flyable in the series. Each aircraft comes with its own photorealistic instrument panel and distinct sound set, a major step forward in authenticity.
The simulator also embraces hardware advances. It is the first in the series to support 3D graphics acceleration, allowing for smoother frame rates, texture filtering, haze and visibility effects, and sunrise/sunset lighting. It also supports force‑feedback joysticks, letting pilots feel trim forces and turbulence through their controls. These features make the experience more tactile and immersive than earlier versions.
Dynamic scenery is another highlight. AI aircraft and vehicles move around airports and skies, creating a sense of a living world. The simulator also maintains compatibility with FS95 scenery packs, ensuring continuity for long‑time users.
Reception at the time was strong. Reviewers praised the expanded scope, improved realism, and hardware support, though some note that it feels more like a service update than a full generational leap. Still, FS98 sells over a million copies within months, cementing its place as one of the most widely played flight simulators of its era.
