Xbox Protection Cord

A replacement for the original Xbox AC cable, which was a simple figure-8 cable.  Microsoft recalled these and sent out replacement cables with overload protection to registered purchasers.

Description

The Xbox Protection Cord was part of a global recall programme announced in early-2005, when the company offered free replacement power cords for the original Xbox due to fire and shock risks. The issue stemmed from the design of the first‑generation Xbox’s internal power supply. Poor strain relief on the AC connector meant that repeated plugging and unplugging could crack solder joints, leading to sparking and, in rare cases, small fires. Rather than recalling consoles outright, Microsoft distributed a special replacement cord with an integrated circuit breaker.

This cords was designed to trip and cut power if abnormal electrical activity occurred, reducing the risk of overheating or fire. The 240V versions had the breaker situated in the middle of the cord, between the plugs for the wall socket and console. This differed from the US and Japanese versions, which have the breaker integrated into the wall socket plug. The cords were packaged in non-retail packaging, with instructions.

The recall covered consoles manufactured before October 23, 2003, which was 14 million worldwide. Owners were instructed to register online or by phone to receive the new cord free of charge. Microsoft emphasised that only a “small number” of incidents had been reported, but the recall was precautionary. The replacement cords began shipping in early 2005, and users were advised to stop using their Xbox until the new cord arrived.

Although there was undoubtedly a legal and risk aspect to their decision, most appreciated the free replacement and Microsoft’s proactive communication. That said the solution was a patch rather than a true fix, since the underlying power supply design remained unchanged. The console itself could still suffer from cracked solder joints if stressed. The misadventure was one of the largest console accessory recalls, emblematic of early 2000s hardware safety issues.
