Super Momotarō Dentetsu

スーパー桃太郎電鉄

A handheld version of Hudson’s board game style train/business series that supports up to four person multiplayer.

Description

Super Momotarō Dentetsu is a digital board game where players travel around Japan by rolling dice, visiting stations, buying properties, collecting income, and trying to end the game with the highest total assets. This entry is especially important because it reshaped Momotarō Dentetsu into the format that later became the series standard. Instead of each player having separate goals, all players now race toward the same destination station, creating a much more direct competitive structure. When someone reaches the destination, that player receives a reward, while the player farthest away is punished by having Binbōgami attach to them.

The gameplay introduces several systems that became long-running Momotetsu staples, including cards, debt, station types, property income rates, and monopoly bonuses for buying every property in a city. Cards add strategy and chaos, letting players move farther, interfere with rivals, protect themselves, or suffer negative effects depending on the card. The core objective is not simply to reach destinations, but to grow the strongest business empire. Players buy properties at stations, earn money from those properties during yearly settlements, and are ranked by total assets at the end of the chosen game length. One year is structured around monthly turns from April through February, with March used for settlement rather than normal movement.

The Game Boy version supports multiplayer with the Game Link Cable and the 4-player adapter. Compared with later entries, it is simpler and more limited, but it is a major early foundation for the series. It lacks later features such as King Bomby, but it already has the basic rhythm of rolling dice, racing to destinations, buying properties, using cards, and trying not to get stuck with Binbōgami.
