Nemesis

ネメシス

A horizontally shooter for the Game Boy, it is the first portable entry in the Gradius series, featuring five stages, the series’ trademark power‑up system, and original level design distinct from the arcade games.

Description

Nemesis for the Nintendo Game Boy is a vertical shooter released in the first 12 months of the Game Boy’s life. It serves as a portable adaptation of the Gradius, retaining core mechanics such as power-up selection, enemy wave patterns, and boss encounters. Despite hardware limitations, the game preserves the strategic pacing and weapon progression that define its arcade lineage. Nemesis demonstrates how early Game Boy titles were reinterpreted for handheld play. Level design is scaled down, visuals are simplified, but control remain responsive.

You pilot the Vic Viper through five horizontally scrolling stages, each culminating in a core boss battle. The familiar Gradius power‑up bar returns, allowing players to collect capsules and activate upgrades such as Speed‑Up, Missiles, Double, Laser, and Options. Unique to this version are multi‑level missiles and hidden bonus stages that reward extra lives and score bonuses. The game opens with a stage‑select screen, letting players choose their starting point — a feature uncommon in the series. Despite the Game Boy’s hardware limitations, Konami’s design preserved the intensity of Gradius gameplay, with tight hit detection and enemy patterns adapted for the smaller screen. Music was composed by Michiru Yamane and Tomoya Tomita, marking an early appearance for Yamane, who would later become renowned for her Castlevania scores.

The game was very well received, bringing a popular arcade game to a handheld platform. The game later reappeared in the Konami GB Collection (1997–2000) for Game Boy and Game Boy Color, retitled simply Gradius. A sequel, Gradius: The Interstellar Assault (1991), followed on the same platform, continuing the handheld branch of the series.
