Description
The violet GameCube controller was released in Japan in September 2001 as the standard pack‑in with the launch of the Nintendo GameCube. It was the primary colour associated with the system’s debut, paired with the matching violet console. The controller introduced a new ergonomic design compared to the Nintendo 64, with two wing‑style grips and a distinctive asymmetrical button layout centred around the large green A button. Supporting this were the smaller red B, grey X and Y buttons, a yellow C‑stick, a grey analogue stick, a digital D‑pad, and two analogue triggers with digital click functions.
The violet controller established the template that would define the GameCube’s identity. Its bold purple hue became the visual shorthand for the console in Japan, just as it did in Western markets where the colour was marketed as “Indigo”. On the initial Japanese console launch I ordered a set of 4 controllers including 2x violet (including the one included with the console) and 2x orange in their retail boxes.
The violet model remains one of the most recognisable pieces of Nintendo hardware, closely tied to the early 2000s aesthetic of the GameCube era. Its enduring popularity is reinforced by its association with the Super Smash Bros. series, where the GameCube controller became the competitive standard. Later reissues of the controller for Wii U and Switch were produced only in black, leaving violet as a colour uniquely tied to the original launch period.
